My Methodology

The video exerts from my lectures outlined below as well as some short introductory remarks are designed to give you a basic insight into the main components of the scouting and performance analysis workflows that I employ.

A more extensive explanation is not compatible with this format but for those interesting in reading or listening more about the performance analysis methodology I employ I am always open to chat so don't hesitate to get in contact!

The Importance Of Our Job

There is an extensive body of opinion from both academic and applied side of our sport that demonstrates the necessity of an elite performance analysis department or group, and a talented performance analyst to lead that group, as essential components of high performance organisations.  In this exert from one of my lectures (Left) I discuss the importance of Performance Analysis to the coaching process in basketball:

Individual Scouting (What We Collect)

Knowing what information we need to collect is the first hurdle we must cross. We must have a deep knowledge of what our coaching staff will find useful in order to prepare their game plan for the upcoming opponent. If the data we collect is not immediately + simplistically applicable then there is no point in us designing systems in order to collect that data because it will have no baring on the coaching process. In this exert from one of my lectures (right)  I discuss the information that staffs that I have worked for and with, have found useful in terms of informing game planning for “Individual Players” from the opponent team:

Team  Scouting (What We Collect)

The second element of any scouting report is the "team"; we know that individual attributes will greatly impact upon how the team attacks and defends however we must gather accurate and applicable data and information as to how those individuals interact both offensively and defensively as part of a group/team. The exert from one of my lectures on the left talks you through some of the info that staffs I have worked on have found useful in game planning for opponent teams:

How We Present "Individual Scouting"

We are coaches and performance analysts our players are not. Therefore we must find a way of presenting the necessary information in an engaging manner that instils within the players the precise elements of the game plan or scout which staff wish to present to the players. In this exert from one of my lectures (right) I talk about how we can engage the players and present large swathes of complex information into simplistic scouting and game preparation tools that players find simple and effective to use:

Workflows

In a world where we are now playing 2-3 games per week both in the club season and the national team season, efficiency is the key to success. We have to design workflows that allow us to collect and present all essential data and information in the most time efficient manner possible without compromising on the quality of our work. This process very rarely takes place in the comfort of an office but in many cases takes place while waiting to board your connecting flight to an away game out with the reach of stable internet . In this exert from one of my lectures (Left) I discuss workflows from both national team and club level that help us to collect all the necessary information we need in the most efficient manner possible:
